Negative taken for September 28, 1961, Arkansas Gazette article "Hampson Indian Collection Gets a New Home," B1:3. The Arkansas Publicity and Parks Commission opened Hampson Museum State Park at Wilson, Mississippi County, Arkansas. It was built to house the collection of the Dr. James K. Hampson (1877-1956), an physician who was originally from Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. The museum was named for Dr. Hampson and his son Henry Clay Hampson II, who was shot down over Burma during World War II. Dr. Hampson began collecting as a child of nine and continued the hobby for the rest of his life. Approximately 40,000 objects were given to the museum by his wife, Frances LaCost Hampson (center) and her daughters, Mary Melody and Dixie Durham.
